All about Bragança and Portugal

a powerful symbol of its medieval past

History: A Citadel Through the Ages

The castle’s origins can be traced back to the time of Portugal’s first king, Afonso Henriques, but its current form is largely due to the reconstruction efforts ordered by King João I in 1409. The castle has a turbulent past, having been occupied during the Moorish period and undergoing devastation and reconstruction during the Christian reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula. Today, it stands as a testament to the country’s enduring heritage, serving as a powerful symbol of its medieval past.

What to see inside ?

The castle complex is more than just a fortress; it’s a small citadel that includes several notable buildings:

  • The Keep (Torre de Menagem): This impressive, 33-meter-tall tower is the castle’s most prominent feature. Inside, you’ll find the Military Museum, which houses a collection of ancient weapons and armor, providing insight into Portugal’s military history. The climb to the top is well worth it for the spectacular views of the city and the distant mountains.

  • The Domus Municipalis: A unique example of Romanesque civil architecture in Portugal, this building is believed to have originally served as a cistern.

  • The Church of Santa Maria: Located within the central parade ground, this charming church adds to the historical atmosphere of the citadel.

  • The Walls and Towers: Walk along the castle walls, which are reinforced by fifteen towers, and discover the « Tower of the Princess » (Torre da Princesa), a former residence with its own legend of a captive princess.
